This past week I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to speak to some Marketing Club students at West Georgia. I thought about what to say for weeks leading up to speaking. I ended up speaking about what I do now, what I learned while in school, and what I wish I’d paid more attention to. Those three things ended up being exactly what the students needed to hear. It definitely reminded me of how I didn’t take all the necessary steps to be prepared to graduate.
When I did graduate from college in May 2008, I didn’t get one call back about my resume. I was actively searching as best I knew how (mainly online) but not getting many results. A key mistake that I made was not interning before I graduated. That was a crucial mistake that I made. Internships often lead to jobs, networking and referrals. All of those things are crucial and I didn’t have them. I also talked to them about how they should make their online presence professional. Social media sites are fun, but if you are searching for a job, they can ruin your chances of getting your foot in the door. Yeah, you can make things “private” but honestly, there are ways around those things. Especially for a person who is highly savvy online.
The strangest part of speaking was walking the halls in my business suit instead of my jeans and West Georgia t shirts and apparel. I felt so out of place. I’m not sure how I was supposed to feel going back but it was definitely awkward. Part of me was incredibly proud of myself and appreciative of the opportunity. The other part of me was reassessing goals and thinking where will I get to speak next? I’m not surprised by the feelings. I often do that to myself. Focus on what’s next instead of what is now. In the now, I’m very proud of myself. And ending on that note is best!
My speaker’s gift, that is now on my shelf!
So what advice would you give to someone who is actively pursuing a career in marketing? I got laid off last year and I did the “correct” thing in school by interning and getting involved with different organizations but I still have not been able to find anything as of lately. Would you suggest joining the American Marketing Association?
Jasmine – If you are actively pursuing a career in Marketing I’d say definitely enhance your social media skills. LinkedIn and Twitter are great resources that you can use for your job search. Network, and attend meet ups. I got my job by being the intern first. It was very difficult, but it paid off. Joining AMA is helpful, but if you can attend the luncheons and network that way before joining to make sure it is the right fit for you. I was a member of PRSA last year and it was great for networking and I learned a lot from the luncheons. There are also some twitter feeds like @MarketingJobAtl is a good one for jobs posts. Most of all, I’d say be patient. Something is out there, but it might take some time for you to get to it. Hope that information is helpful!
