Brussel sprouts have a bad reputation. In fact, I’d never given them a shot at all. Ever. But I was reading one of my favorite blogs, With A Southern Twist, and she did a post spotlighting how great Brussel sprouts are. They are a cruciferous vegetable (think lettuce, kale, greens) full of vitamin K and vitamin C. So I headed over to Trader Joe’s and purchased them as she recommended. I paid under $4.00 but got two separate Brussel sprout dishes out of that. So I’d say, that’s a great deal since I got to try them two different ways. One of the recipes came from the Epicurious app on my iPad. I liked this recipe a lot and it gave the sprouts an excellent flavor. The second time that I made them, I decided to just steam them with onions using my new Martha Stewart vegetable steamer. The second recipe is really convenient and equally tasty to the first. What I like most about Brussel sprouts is that they taste great and are really filling. The entire stalk lasted through lunch and dinner for at most three days.

Recipe:

1/2 a stalk of Brussel sprouts

1/4 cup of onions

Place the Brussel sprouts in vegetable steamer with sliced onions. Steam until slightly crisp. As you cook them, they will develop a brighter green color.

They taste like flavorful cabbage to me. I like the crunchiness of them. If you cook them just right they will taste great and you feel full. I had them with baked tilapia.
