This Friday night I went on a date to the Center for Puppetry Arts. I received free tickets from Scoutmob to see the adult show White Like Me. Speaking of Scoutmob, they are pretty cool! I’ve been telling all of my friends who still don’t use them yet to jump on the bandwagon. They have the scoop on what’s happening in and around Atlanta and may other cities. Plus, they save you money. Who doesn’t want to save money? So, back to White Like Me…

{The program photo I took and posted to Foursquare}

First, we toured the Center for Puppetry Arts including the Jim Henson exhibit. We grabbed our wine and sat down for the show. I watched a short preview of the show, but I didn’t know what I was in for. At all. Paul Zaloom is an actor and puppeteer who was also on the educational kids show Beakman’s World. Basically, the show is about being a white man. That’s a topic that I have no clue about (obviously). I also have never heard a white man’s perspective on being a white man. Paul, is talented and he was able to create lots of humorous and thought provoking moments throughout his performance. He started things off doing ventriloquism with a puppet who lived during the Vaudeville era and is oblivious to modern times. The puppet has been in a box for some time and he has no clue of how much the world has changed. So Paul explains many modern things to him like iPhones, internet and Barack Obama. This conversation leads him to tell the story of “White-Man” and how he lands on planet Earth and civilizes things (his words). Overall, the production stimulated some great conversation over dinner at Fig Jam.

I had a great time at the show. I had no clue that the Center for Puppetry Arts did productions for adults. It’s a fun evening outing with a date or for a girl’s night. I joined their email list so that I can stay in the loop and know about their upcoming adult events. I would even take a cool pal back there! My date was also equally impressed by my cunning ability to find something unique for us to do 🙂
