I stayed up late last night watching Gabrielle Union’s show on BET. Have you heard about Being Mary Jane?

Being Mary Jane

I liked the show! Gabrielle Union looks fabulously fit and the story line was realistic with a great cast. I like how the show is a drama more like reality than other shows. Mary Jane is a career ambitious woman who struggles with relationships with her family and with men she is dating. So much drama was packed into the first five minutes. Woo! The #1 dislike for me is the show’s start time. 10:30 pm EST is a bit ridiculous and unrealistic for me regularly since I wake up at 5am. Currently, I don’t have DVR or on Demand (sigh) so I will have to catch reruns or hopefully, I can catch the show online.

Speaking of relationships, I wanted to talk about a book that I just finished called It’s Complicated by Paul C. Brunson. Long ago in the early days of Twitter (meaning 2 years ago, lol), I stumbled upon a cool weekly occurrence called Modern Day Matchmaker Wednesday on Twitter. I remember joining in on Wednesdays during lunch watching my Twitter feed for questions from prospective matches then having the photos revealed at the end of the hour. One of the best parts of Modern Day Matchmaker? Seeing the questions that people ask and then recognizing the importance of maintaining a professional and respectable presence online. Trust me, working in social media I have literally seen all kinds of things. All kinds of things. How can a girl say she is seriously looking with very inappropriate photos? Or how can a guy who disrespects women be seriously looking for a committed companion? That’s important too! I learned more about Paul and his matchmaking profession. He recently put his talent to work on the OWN Network show Lovetown, USA. Which I enjoyed watching. I even met Paul during his live event in Atlanta last fall.

It’s Complicated (But It Doesn’t Have to Be): A Modern Guide to Finding and Keeping Love is a really different dating book. It didn’t feel like a lecture by any means. I also appreciate how the very first chapter is titled, Marriage Isn’t for Everyone. Those four words couldn’t be more true. Paul offers advice for people who desire to get married and helpful tips for those who don’t think marriage is for them.

Purse sized reading :). Not too heavy or large to drop in my purse and read anywhere. That’s definitely a plus!

I never really talk about my dating relationships on my blog, but in a quest to be more open. I would like to talk about some aspects of it 😉 I just got out of a relationship a few weeks ago. Honestly, we had a major issue that I couldn’t get over. I had to distinguish between if this was a non-starter (need) or a preference (want) as Paul would say and if I could accept that about his personality. I felt like it was a need for me and we agreed to break up. I also really appreciate Paul’s “notions” about marriage. Who should read this book? Anyone looking for straight-forward and direct dating advice from a married matchmaker and personal certified lifestyle coach. More important than what any book can teach you, dating requires getting out there. Paul aims to help you strategically date making things much less complicated! It’s been a rainy summer so far here in Georgia :(, so reading has been a great way to avoid the dreary days! Have you read any interesting books lately?
