In the spring of 2016, the Piano and The Microphone tour came to the Fox Theatre here in Atlanta. I bought tickets to attend with a friend and fellow Prince fan. They asked us to experience the concert without social media. So unfortunately, I don’t have any videos to remember the night by. Only one lone photo of the piano. However, I will never ever forget that night. The music, the energy, the people. The two of us kind of thought this might be our only shot at seeing Prince. The tour stopped in Atlanta on April 14 and Prince died on April 21.

I heard about The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince and picked it up first and foremost because of the association to Prince. It was the first memoir to come out about him after his death and it referenced one of my favorite songs of all time by him The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.

What I learned from this book: I enjoyed reading about Mayte Garcia’s life. Sometimes when you date a really famous person, it’s easy for all of the stories out there about you to revolve around them. This book covered a lot about her dance career and life after her marriage to Prince which I appreciated reading. We aren’t the sum of our relationships even if they are a large part of our lives.

Who I would recommend this book to: Prince fans. Of course. There’s a lot covering the 1990s period of Prince. This is the period where I was introduced to him so I enjoyed the insight about that season. I enjoyed reading about The Black Album, The Gold Experience, his touring and life outside of the limelight. There was a good amount of personal heartbreak, but I appreciate Mayte’s ability to share that. I also like learning about her upbringing and present life.
