O is for Ohm

What a week! I feel like it went by so fast. I did all of my running around earlier this week. Yesterday and today have been more laid back. This weekend I am running the Sweetwater 420 Festival 5k. Last year was so much fun that I signed up for another one! It’s a fun race (with a huge hill) where beer, festival entry and a cool t-shirt are included in your entry. I’ve been following my interval running plan and it’s going great. I also decided to join in on the Tone It Up Spring Into Bikini season challenge. It’s 8 weeks long. You can sign up too!

I’m pretty sore today from all of the action this week, so I’m going to relax with some yoga. I use Sadie Nardini‘s workouts from YouTube. I’m going through 3 rounds of this playlist this morning:

Happy Friday!

N is for Never Too Much

N was a tough one for me today. I thought about all sorts of heavy topics. Then I decided to just keep it light and this song was what came to mind. I told you I like 80s music :) Enjoy:

K is for Klymaxx

This post is about music. Not anything else. Just telling you now to avoid future disappointment while reading. A while back, I found myself watching an episode of Unsung. I love shows like Unsung because it’s almost like watching a biography on television. Unfortunately, TV One is not included as an option with our cable provider. So I must have seen this episode at a hotel on a trip or at a friend’s house. Well, anyway, Unsung is great!

This particular day, I learned about Klymaxx. The band had success back in the mid to late 80s. I was born smack dab in the middle of the decade, so I can honestly say I don’t know as much about 80s music as I do about 90s. Well anyway, Klymaxx had a few hits. Like “Meeting in the Ladies Room” and “The Men All Pause”. The lyrics are cool and confident ladies anthems. I like them both. I even have them on my iPod now. They are great songs to help you get pumped up for a night out while getting ready ;) If you like 80s music, think along the lines of Vanity 6 and Rick James. That’s what I think of when I hear them. Take a listen below:

Oh yeah, and J is for Joke’s on You

This photo is too funny:

Oh and for some reason, because these two things go together:

Happy Friday the 13th, have an awesome weekend!

What I Know For Sure vol. 4

I haven’t done one of these since October. So I have lots of random thoughts to touch on today :)

- My intuition is never wrong. It has a BS meter. It gets better with age.

- Not sending thank you notes is rude. Period.

- I must be cool, everyone wants me to join their pyramid scheme.

- If a company has to specifically ask you to say nice things about them, obviously, they are being dishonest and have something to hide right?

- Sometimes bad news is really good news in disguise.

- Having an inflated title that you gave yourself doesn’t amount to much.

- Glee isn’t the same anymore.

- Saying “I love you” as I’m trying to break things off with you doesn’t change anything.

- Scandal comes on TV too late. I’ll just watch on hulu when I feel like it.

- 10pm bedtimes make me feel good in the morning for my 5am alarm.

- Hillary Clinton has a sense of humor.

- Liquid Chlorophyll works expeditiously.

- Sometimes walking away without a fight is hard, but completely worth it.

- My “poker face” is better these days. Win.

- Folks who post pictures of their receipts or money on social media sites are asking to get robbed.

- I’m glad this week is over. For real.

I is for Intervals

Earlier this year I ran the ING Miami Marathon. Well, to be honest…since then I haven’t kept up my running. Which sucks now that I have several races coming up and have set a goal to run my next half in under 2 hours. Now, I have to start from scratch and get my mojo back. Last Thursday during my trip to Grandma’s house I spent the morning reading magazines. One of which was Competitor.

I don’t remember where I got this issue. Or if I picked it up from my Dad. Looking at where you can grab copies of the Competitor (which is free in print edition, digital editions have a subscription cost) I think my brother picked it up and left it lying around since they have copies of it at his gym. Well, the magazine was meant to find me because inside, there’s a 12 week half marathon training schedule. I am not doing a half in 12 weeks. But I have the Peacthree in July, a 5k next week and the dirty girl at the end of the month and after (all of) that I will be picking a half in the fall to do. So, I need to get back into running shape. The schedule is a great way to do that. I function better when there’s a plan already in place. That forces me to follow through. I couldn’t find the schedule online, but I will create a calendar so that I can stay on track!

I plan to start Monday! The program includes cross training and intervals. Have you started a new workout program for summer?

F is for Forget You

Ever have those moments where you have to hold everything in to keep your cool?

I do.

However, I am getting better at keeping my cool through those conversations. Much better than I used to be able to in the past. For anyone struggling with that issue, I highly recommend reading the following book:

{via}

This book came into my life at the perfect time. Right around this time last year, I was frustrated with my career path and felt like I was not going in the direction that I needed to. The book breaks down the fact that many successful people in this world do not want to grow and do not want to learn. The reason why they don’t want to grow and learn is a simple one: they are already successful, why change? The title of the book comes from that sentiment. What got you to success here, won’t get you to (continued) success there (in the future). Get it? The methods that helped you reach the level of success where you are, won’t get you to where you want to be. It’s like that Albert Einstein quote:

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

My issue, was that I was trying to help people and contribute ideas to superiors who already had the answers and I did not want to become a leader who had no desire to learn. Everyone, do know that in order to be an effective and respected leader, you have to be open to listen and learn. A leader who isn’t, is a leader who is not effective, respected or liked. This is often the case in many organizations big and small. A big title doesn’t mean that you can’t listen and respect those beneath you. A big title doesn’t mean that you don’t show respect to elders in an organization. A big title is just a big title. The best part about the book is that the author, Marshall Goldsmith, actually goes into organizations and helps CEOs and C-level executives fix problems that are hindering their success. I learned tons about myself and how to determine when and where to contribute my expertise.  Honestly, this book is one to reread again and again. As I’m looking at it in my lap, I realize that I need a refresher course :) the book is worth every penny.

About the title of this post: sometimes the best thing to dissolve a tense situation is to just forget the person. What I mean is that I don’t dwell on conversations with individuals who don’t listen. I used to do that. They used to frustrate me. But they aren’t really worth worrying about. It doesn’t take much time to really see how a person accepts feedback. They openly reject it, they are argumentative and sometimes they steal your ideas and credit them as their own to impress others. Trust me, it has happened in the past. Don’t let it frustrate you, that’s just how jobs work! Observe and learn.

My advice to you: Read the book, it’s a great way to discover more about yourself and your professional presence. Have you read anything about leadership and business that changed your perspective for the better? Share it with me, I’m open to learning!

E is Expelliarmus

E should be for Excuses or Easter. Both kept me from keeping on schedule with the A to Z Challenge. However, I’m back now in full effect and ready to take on the week. For those that don’t know what Expelliarmus means, I’ll break it down. Expelliarmus is a disarming spell from Harry Potter. I read all of the books and have seen all of the Harry Potter movies. Harry Potter is on my mind big time right now because next month I’m going to Orlando to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter!

"Wizarding World of Harry Potter"

I decided to plan out the Orlando trip using social media only. Stay tuned for how that works out. Have you ever been to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter? What should I make sure to do?

D is for Dirty Girl

I thought long and hard about what to write about today for the letter D. Then I got a message from Fitfluential this afternoon that I WON an entry to participate in the Dirty Girl Run coming to Atlanta on April 28! I’ve been interested in the race since I learned about it from a weekly FitFluential Twitter chat. This will be my first obstacle course/mud run ever. Good thing is, I can use my shoes from The Color Run since they are still a festive purple!

Are you doing the Dirty Girl Run? Let me know :)

C is for Candied Yams

I’m at my grandmother’s house for the day and she taught me how to make candied yams. I figured that’s the perfect thing to feature for C. Everyone loved them here and most went back for seconds. It’s a good dish to enjoy sparingly because there’s a good amount of sugar and butter. But hey, who gets to eat grandma’s home cooking everyday? Not me.

{Taken with Instagram}

Ingredients

8 sweet potatoes – medium sized

3 tbs hazelnut

1/2 cup of butter ( I used a combination of sweet cream butter and regular unsalted)

3 tbs cinnamin

3 cups white sugar

2 tbs vanilla extract

3 cups water

Start by peeling your potatoes and slicing them. Make the slices about 1/2 inch thick.

Next, start boiling 2 cups of water in a saute pan heating on high.

While the water is starting to boil, add the sugar, vanilla extract, hazelnut, and cinnamon. Lastly, add the butter.

After the ingredients come to a boil slowly stir in the potatoes.

Cover the pan with one side of the lid up so that the pan isn’t entirely covered.

Periodically check the potatoes. I flipped mine once then continued to let them boil until the water was more of a syrup and the potatoes were done. Let the heat remain on high and make sure that you do not slice the potatoes too thick so that they can cook evenly and faster.

Enjoy!
